Precious
The film Precious, based on the novel PUSH by Sapphire received 103 nominations and 113 wins.
Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire premiered at both the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and the 2009
Cannes Film Festival. On November 6, 2009, there was a Limited release in around 18 theaters with a new
title: Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. By November 20, 2009 there was an expanded
release earning over $63 million on a $10 million budget.
"People ask me: is it a story about obesity, abuse or race? Actually, what it's really about is the transformative power of literacy. At the end of the film, Precious is still black, still poor and still fat but what's changed is that she can read and write and has begun to re-invent herself. She has left her abusive home environment, and has gone from feeling stupid and worthless to embracing a positive vision of her future."
